Gazi University was opened with the name of "Secondary Teacher School and Training Institute" by the instructions of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1926. Its name was changed to "Gazi Secondary Teacher School and Training Institute" in 1929, then it was renamed as "Gazi Education Institute" in 1976, and it became "Gazi University" in 1982.

Gazi University, a research university in the center of Ankara, includes the first education institution to train the Republic's pioneering teachers. Since 1926, Gazi University is a respected and pioneering university at a national and international level with its interdisciplinary and qualified research, entrepreneurship, high-level education, and community service.

The Division of Primary Education was opened to meet the Ministry of National Education's primary teacher needs in the 1997-1998 academic year. The Division of Primary Education is under the umbrella of the Gazi Faculty of Education, within the Department of Basic Education.

The aim of our division is to provide students with the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities that will be required in their professional lives. Moreover, to raise primary teachers who will combine field experiences with theoretical education, be an accurate model for their students in their personal and professional lives, follow the developments in the field, use their time efficiently, have effective communication skills and adopt scientific ethics, be aware of lifelong learning, and be sensitive to people, society and nature.

Strengths of the Division of Primary Education as follows;

  • The faculty members and staff of the division conduct national/international studies regularly and make contributions to the field continuously,
  • The faculty members and staff of the division support the participation of both undergraduate and graduate students in academic activities such as conferences, congresses, and symposiums
  • The faculty members and staff are multidisciplinary and experts,
  • The division has the necessary classrooms for some special lessons in the program.

The education language of the Division of Primary Education is Turkish, and the education period is four years. The program includes subject matter knowledge, general culture, professional teaching knowledge, and practice lessons.  In our division, courses are conducted on a semester basis. In addition to the compulsory courses, there are also elective courses for students' interests and abilities. Our students have the opportunity to experience the teaching profession in the classroom, thanks to courses such as "Observation in Schools" and "Teaching Practice." F-Block and C-Block classrooms of the Gazi Faculty of Education are used for lessons.

Gazi University’s students can;

- benefit from student exchange programs such as Erasmus and Farabi,

- engage in social activities by participating in student clubs,

- access many local and foreign resources in our library that is located in Gazi University Rectorate Campus.

-apply to the Student Counseling and Scholarship Services and benefit from guidance, social counseling, and student counseling services, and you can apply for a part-time job and meal scholarships.

- International students can learn Turkish with the training provided by TÖMER, and they can improve their self-expression skills.

After graduating from high school, candidates who want to study in the Division of Primary Education are required to attend and get enough points from Basic Proficiency Test (BPT/TYT) and Subject Proficiency Test (SPT/AYT) sessions in the Higher Education Institutions Exam conducted by Student Selection and Placement Center (SSPC/ÖSYM).

Our primary teachers leave unforgettable memories in our lives. They help us meet school life, and they are the first teachers to teach us how to read and write. In this respect, primary school teaching is a very sacred profession, and some features should be found in people who will prefer primary school teaching.

Some of these features are listed as follows:

- Being friendly, tolerant, affectionate, and patient towards children

- High empathy skills

- To be able to use communication skills effectively and correctly

- To be able to adapt to developing and changing time conditions and technology

- Being open-minded and objective

- Paying attention to and respecting individual differences

- To have analysis skills

- Having creative thinking skills

- To be able to look at events with a critical eye

- Being open to self-improvement

- Having leadership qualifications.

Students who have successfully completed the Primary Education Undergraduate Program can continue their master's and doctoral programs at our university or other universities. Our graduates can be employed as teachers in primary schools, private schools, and teaching centers affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. They can also work as research assistants and lecturers in relevant departments of universities.

The offices of the academic staff are on the 3rd floor of the Bosna Building. As of the 2020-2021 academic year, the Division of Primary Education has 16 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 1 Doctor Instructor, 3 Instructors, and 7 Research Assistants. Several books are written, edited, and translated, many articles are published in well-known journals and papers presented in international and national symposiums by our division’s faculty members.

International Primary Teaching Symposium (IPTS/USOS) is held every year with the cooperation of our division and the Primary Education Divisions at other universities to share scientific studies, practices, and experiences regarding primary education, to bring together academicians, teachers, and students, to maximize scientific and social interaction, to provide cooperation, coordination and to create new perspectives. Academicians, teachers, graduate, and undergraduate students from various countries attend the International Primary Teaching Symposium and present their scientific studies.
